Always thought “make hay while the sun shines” was an idiom. Turns out it’s a proverb attributed to medieval English farmers. We generally associate the phrase with making good use of your time, but more specifically, it is meant to convey that you should take advantage of the chance to do something while conditions are good. To that end, remember that the Charles P. Crowley Company is always ready to serve you with superior engineered equipment, systems, and solutions to improve the performance of your facility … when everything’s sunny, as well as when problems arise.
The sun will most likely be shining at the 40th Annual Tri-State Seminar, August 4-7 at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. If you’re going, be sure to stop by and see us at booths 321-328.
July’s Chatter shines brightly on preventing odor and corrosion, as well as mitigating the risk of toxic gas releases. Then we cut to realizing improved reliability and efficiency in industrial wastewater applications. Finally, we gather the intel on what sets rotary positive displacement 3-screw pumps apart.
Let’s roll out the Chatter …
Manufacturer of the Month
The importance of clean air, free from odors, pollutants, and toxins, is sometimes underrated in the water and wastewater industry. PURAFIL is the single-source manufacturer for eliminating odors, protecting critical electronics from corrosion, and mitigating risks to human life in toxic gas releases.
Engineered Media
Purafil’s patented media formulations are manufactured using special chemicals that react with odorous gases and remove them from the air stream. Contaminant gases are chemically transformed into harmless solids that remain trapped inside the media. Known as chemisorption, this process converts odors and toxic fumes into harmless salts. Once the gases are removed from your environment, they cannot re-enter the air stream. Purafil’s dry-scrubbing media can be bulk-filled within their engineered equipment or provided in different forms to best fit your application.
Air Quality Assessment
Monitoring air quality is an essential part of your corrosion control program. Passive monitoring using Purafil’s Corrosion Classification Coupon (CCC) involves the installation of a one-time use copper and silver coupon that accumulates corrosion over a 30-day period. This easy to install and inexpensive process is measured to determine your environment’s specific air quality level.
Air Quality Monitoring
Purafil’s OnGuard® Smart (OGS) Monitor helps protect your equipment by measuring and transmitting the level of corrosion in your facility, allowing for action to be taken before problems develop. Purafil’s OGS can transmit real-time data to your SCADA system via a 4-20 mA output signal, and is accessible over ethernet. In addition, the Purafil OGS contains internal temperature, humidity, and room pressure sensors.
The Cutting Edge
SULZER INDUSTRIAL PUMPS, also known as the Flow Equipment Division, specializes in pumping solutions specifically engineered for the processes of our customers. Sulzer provides pumps, agitators, compressors, grinders, screens and filters developed through intensive research and development in fluid dynamics and advanced materials.
As one of the world’s leading pump manufacturers, Sulzer provides a wide range of products for engineered, configured, and standard pumping solutions, as well as essential auxiliary equipment. Sulzer pumps are widely recognized as state-of-the-art, renowned for performance reliability, and regarded as efficient solutions.
Submersible Centrifugal Pumps
Sulzer’s innovative pumps, impellers and controllers ensure the highest reliability – and energy efficiency. Submersible sewage pumps are ideal for pumping in facilities with wastewater pumping stations. The pumps are equipped with Premium Efficiency IE3 motors as standard and with the ContraBlock family of impellers. The applications extend from pumping of light and medium duty, to pumping of heavy duty with high concentration of solids in industrial wastewater applications.
Top Three
Three screw pumps are the largest class of multiple screw pumps in service today. Part of CIRCOR, IMO three-screw pumps reliably deliver increased uptime, longer maintenance intervals, and longevity. This also translates to savings on machinery lubrication, crude oil transport, hydraulic power transfer, fuel oil transport and machine coolant applications.
Three-screw pumps operate on the same principle of intermeshing screws as twin-screw pumps, but use a centrally located primary drive screw, or power rotor, which intermeshes with two secondary sealing screws, or idler rotors. This creates a moving labyrinth seal, which captures the fluid and transports it axially within a fluid closure (see Figure A). The pumping element does not pre-compress the fluid, rather transports it from the suction side of the pump to the discharge port in a smooth, continuous manner. The fluid closure concept provides the three-screw pump with its positive displacement capability.
Symmetrical pressure loading on the power rotor with such small forces eliminates the need for bearings to absorb radial forces. The idler rotors generate a hydrodynamic film providing radial support similar to journal bearings (See Figure B). Axial loads on the rotors, created by differential pressure, balance them hydraulically with such small forces that they can be handled by a single ball bearing, dramatically increasing the life of the pump.
The simple design of a three-screw pump offers advantages for a wide variety of applications, that include:
- Pulse-free flow with extremely low vibration levels
- Low noise levels
- Higher-pressure boost capabilities
- High energy efficiency
- Long service life
- Excellent suction lift
- Low horsepower consumption
IMO three-screw pumps come in many configurations and sizes, enabling them to serve as a replacement when other pumps are not performing, and can be easily retrofitted into existing systems.
