In the Air

August seems like an especially appropriate time to recognize and appreciate the always steady and dependable fan. Circulation, ventilation, cooling and comfort. Hard not to be a fan of fans, especially when the heat is on. At CPC Co., we’re also big fans of the manufacturers we represent, the colleagues we work with, and the customers we serve. Count on us to come through for you when the heat is on as well!

This month’s Chatter blows in with and expanded view of the inner-workings of a leading non-metallic gear pump. From there, things turn as we highlight tradition and innovation in high viscosity mixing, and then go with the flow for optimal operation of water and wastewater pumps.

Time to breeze through this  Chatter …

Manufacturer of the Month

PULSAFEEDER has a long history of manufacturing products to get the job done, delivering the chemicals into water and processes around the world. Pulsafeeder has earned a reputation for safety, reliability, and consistency in the market, for metering hundreds of chemicals in a broad set of applications and monitoring the processes to provide system assurance.

A prime example is Pulsafeeder’s Eclipse non-metalic gear pumps, that continue to be the clear choice for displacing both diaphragm and peristatic pumps when metering chemicals. The fully non-metallic design makes the Eclipse compatible with a variety of chemicals, and it is a perfect choice when dosing sodium hypochlorite. Eclipse is also available in a variety of sizes to meet a wide range of chemical metering demands.

The Eclipse gear pump allows you to pump safer, operate smoother and service faster and less often than with traditional metering methods:

  • Better Performance – Smooth, pulseless flow means no pulsation dampeners and smaller piping, saving installation cost and complex start-up and service.
  • Safer Operation – The mag-drive sealless design means no leaks or chemical exposure for personnel and the environment.
  • No Surprises and Easy Maintenance – Predictable maintenance through monitoring flow rate and motor speed can provide advance notice of pump operating condition. Though many Eclipse pumps run for years before needing repair, their front pull-out design means you are up and running like new, in just minutes.

The Cutting Edge

ROSS has manufactured industrial mixing, blending, drying and dispersion equipment since 1842. The Double Planetary Mixer, introduced by Ross in the early 1940s, quickly became a standard workhorse for high viscosity mixing throughout the process industries. Ross pioneered a series of design and engineering advancements over the decades, expanding the capabilities of the original Double Planetary Mixer to meet the world’s ever-changing needs.

The introduction of High Viscosity Blades raised the maximum viscosity range to around 6-8 million cP. A number of applications that previously required horizontal sigma blade kneaders are now mixed in Ross Double Planetary Mixers offering better cleanability, smaller footprint and lower capital cost.

Innovative Design
These vertical mixers have no shaft seals, bearing, packing, or stuffing boxes submerged in the product zone. Agitators are raised and lowered in/out of the mix vessel by a hydraulic lift, enabling easy access for cleaning between batches.

Advanced Efficiency
The change can design enables semi-continuous operation, which can significantly increase production. While one vessel is being wheeled away for remote discharge and cleaning, another can be wheeled into position under the mixer to begin the next batch right away.

Top Three

ABB drives, motors, instrumentation and automation solutions are at the forefront of driving innovation in the water sector, adhering to the highest industry and regulatory standards for safe, high-quality water production, distribution, and treatment. ABB’s advanced technologies enable informed decision-making and efficient operations to automate, electrify, and/or digitize water and wastewater plants and infrastructure.

Whether your requirements are in municipal freshwater and wastewater treatment plants, desalination or irrigation plants, pumping stations or for water and wastewater networks, ABB offers a full portfolio of variable speed drives (VSD’s), motors, PLC’s and services, including ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring for powertrains for you to choose from.

The ACQ580 drive, for example, is a robust drive is designed to secure the optimal operation of water and wastewater pumps while ensuring low energy consumption. Offering multi-pump control, supporting a broad range of fieldbus protocols, and complying with all EMC, standards, key benefits of these drives include:

Integrated Safety
Safe Torque Off (STO) is built-in as standard and the ATEX-certified thermistor protection module provides enhanced process safety.

Ultra-Low Harmonic Distortion
Minimizes harmonic distortion in the electrical system, leading to a cleaner and more stable network.

Anti-Cavitation
Extends pump life and secures the process by detecting cavitation and ensuring optimal pump speed.

Meet and get to know a little bit more about a valued member of our team:

Wendell Smith – Applications / Field Service Engineer

Wendell’s primary job responsibilities at the Charles P. Crowley Company (CPC Co.) include systems estimating, electrical and process control design, application engineering for several product lines, and commissioning of equipment.

He also makes outside sales calls on end-use customers and engineering contractors in both the municipal and industrial markets, particularly on applications that require his extensive process and controls background.

Wendell has been actively engaged in inside sales, municipal bidding, and application engineering for the municipal water and wastewater treatment, petrochemical, power production, and general industry markets since 2005, when he began his tenure with CPC Co. His previous experience includes consulting, estimating, and project management services for electrical contractors, as well as project management for nationwide construction projects, including Pepsi Bottling, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Foodmaker restaurants. Wendell also managed the national accounts group for Amtec Lighting. He previously owned WS Electric, which built turnkey ceramics and other production facilities and performed public works subcontracting. Wendell began his career as an Electrician with U.S. Steel American Bridge Division.

Fun Fact: Wendell was an avid rock climber and cyclist. He enjoyed 100-mile bike rides and reaching the peaks of all the mountains in the San Gabriel Valley to the Inland Empire.
